about

This album is a collection of music composed, performed, and recorded by Dino Cevolatti as a tone poem to accompany and honour the artworks of Dirge (artofdirge.com). All music was performed and recorded in one-take (live-looping) with minimal post-production mastering (no over dubs). Each piece is designed to give insight into the psycho-ecology of four families of fantastical creatures, each an aspect of the shattered Shards of the Icosahedron:

"Eons ago the Icosahedron came forth from the Screaming Chaos, so long ago that all knowledge of its arrival has turned into legends, those legends into fables, fables to myths and those myths have been warped and twisted by the competing cults of Oal Naxt to suit their own needs. These cults worship their strange gods, performing arcane rituals while burning feted incense, all to aid them in seeking shards of the icosahedron, the source of their magic and power."

Below I've included my interpretation of each cult's psycho-sonic-ecology along with Dirge's descriptions of their Domain and Theology:

STRATARINS (earth bugs): Muscular, mandibular fighters wriggle and writhe to the rising and receding of half-tone bass notes and creepy chromatic melodies.
DOMAIN: Forsaken Forest - These dark and dense forests are home to an extensive array of plants and fungi, who’ve developed complex symbiotic relationships to nurture the growth and health of the forest. Some of the giant trees within are thought to be almost as old as time itself.
GOD/BELIEFS: Xon Festum - The Night Eater - Xon Festum’s cultists show their reverence by leaving gifts of carrion and rotting vegetation. It is a core belief amongst Stratarins that all strength and life originates in death. It is due to these offerings that the shrines to Xon Festum can often be smelt long before they can be seen.

GILLITHIANS (water fish): Dexterous, slippery rogues flow and flounder to the swelling and sinking whole-tone waves and harrowing hexatonic themes.
DOMAIN: Wailing Wets (NE of the main isle) - The lands of the Gillithians are a mix of swamps, marshes and wetlands cut through by rivers and creeks. It covers all the way up to the north-easternmost point of Oal Naxt, including its beaches.
GOD/BELIEFS: Anura Aegrum - The Diseased Toad - Anura’s main following is amongst the Gillithian Cult, inhabitants of the Wailing Wets. Her favor is often sought through offerings of coins and gems because of her propensity for wealth, though blood sacrifices are not unheard of.

SONARONS (air bats): Sturdy, tribal barbarians fly and frenzy to the droning and domineering minor-tone riffs and darting diminished intervals.
DOMAIN: Misant Mountains (NW of the main isle) - Rugged and cool, the Misant Mountains aren’t easily traversed. Their snow capped peaks and craggy landscape make them inhospitable to all but the most hardy.
GOD/BELIEFS: Chirsonus - The flying dissonance prefers audible placation. Chirsonus’ worshippers show their reverence through ritual chants and singing. These dissonant tones can be heard echoing around the Misant Mountains, where most of her followers are found.

PYREANS (fire newts): Intelligent, noble wizards crackle and cleanse to the majestic and melancholy major-tone chords and tentative augmented harmonies.
DOMAIN: Plagued Plains (SW of the main isle) - The Plagued Plains are an arid and unforgiving region found in the south west of Oal Naxt. They are often hit by strong winds that can whip the sand into deadly cutting blasts that sweep across the land.
GOD/BELIEFS: Askklo - The Ash Claw - Askklo is the primary god of the Pyreans of the Plagued Plains. Gifts of preserved or dried fruit are often seen at his shrines. These offerings are of great significance to the Pyreans as food is scarce, and survival difficult, in the Plagued Plains.
